Day 13
Looking Back and Moving Forward In the African Tradition, there is a bird symbol where the body of the bird is facing forward and the head is facing backward. Its’ significant meaning is: looking back at the past and moving forward into the future. Sojourner found herself looking back on her journey. In 1827 she took her baby, Sophia, as she traveled. It was heart-breaking to leave her other children, but they were not free legally. They would not be free for another twenty years, but she knew that she would return one day to get them. She saw all the pain and trauma she had growing up; the unhealthy decisions she had made. On the other hand, she kept moving forward into her destiny. She knew she had a mission; to make a change in society. She knew everything would work out and she would regain her children. Think Today The significance of Sojourner’s story is in part, that we can gain an understanding of ourselves by seeing her experience as part of our past and our foundation. Though we don’t live in the past, we can allow ourselves to look back on historical events and gain perspective about where we are today. We can use the past to catapult us to new beginnings and hopes, to continue moving forward into new situation, to positive change. Ask Yourself How do I use looking back to move forward? Am I utilizing past historical events to help me stand on new ground? Do I stay stuck in old hurts and setbacks and allow them to keep me from moving forward? Am I presently wondering how I am going to get out of a situation?
